This short, 4km circular route explores parts of the Alhambra complex that you can access without a ticket.
The walk starts in Plaza Nueva. You walk past the Royal Chancillery, the Church of San Gil y Santa Ana, the Bañuelo (the old Arab baths), the Convento de Zafra and the Church of San Pedro and San Pablo. We then come to the Casa de las Chirimías (at the start of Paseo de los Tristes) with the Hotel Reúma on our right, on the other side of the river. We walk through Paseo de los Tristes (or Paseo Padre Manjón) just below the Alhambra and cross the last bridge over the River Darro. Directly opposite is the Cuesta de los Chinos (or Cuesta del Rey Chico, as it's also known). This takes us to the top part of the Alhambra.
After the Fuente del Pimiento, you follow the Paseo del Generalife and walk up to the Torre de la Justicia and through the Puerta de la Justicia. This is one of the main entrances to the Alhambra recinto. The Plaza de los Aljibes is a good place to stop and admire the views of the Barrio Albaicín and Sacromonte.
After the Puerta del Vino, you come to the Palacio Carlos V*, a circular construction within a square building. Here you will find the Museo de la Alhambra* and Museo de Bellas Artes*. As you come out of the palace, turn left and then left again and walk along Calle Real Alta. On your left is the Iglesia de Santa María de la Alhambra*, the Museo de Ángel Barrios* (a famous Granadino composer), and the Baño de la Mezquita*. (* entrace to all these monuments is free). At the end of Calle Real Alta is the Parador de San Francisco where there is an outside café bar and restaurant, with views of the Albaicín and Sacromonte.
You retrace your steps to the Palacio de Carlos V and turn left to the Torre de los Carros and then follow the path down to Fuente del Tomate (a Monument to Ángel Ganivet, a Granadino writer). You walk down along the Cuesta de las Cruces, back through the Puerta de las Granadas and down to Plaza Nueva.
